Pedro "Pete" Berrios Obituary

Pedro “Pete” Berrios, 76, of Jersey City, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2021 at his home with his loving family by his side.

Pedro was born in Puerto Rico on November 26, 1944 and settled with his family in Jersey City in 1959.

Pedro devoted his life to his family and business, Torico Ice Cream, a community staple located in downtown Jersey City in which he founded with his loving wife Pura 53 years ago.

The family business got its start in 1968 when Pedro opened a delicatessen at the corner of Erie and First Streets and later evolved into an ice cream shop landmark that has produced endless smiles and memories.

A pillar of the community and well respected and loved among the neighborhood and city residents, Pedro spent much of his time tending to the business, mentoring countless employees and welcoming patrons.

Pedro found joy in spending time talking and laughing with his family and friends.  He enjoyed taking walks at Liberty State Park, playing dominoes, billiards, and guitar, as well as watching his grandchildren play sports and activities.

Pedro is survived by his wife Pura Berrios of 51 years; four daughters and sons-in-law, Denise Berrios Johnson and her husband Dave Johnson; Carolyn Berrios and her husband Nicolaos Gantaifis; Virginia Berrios; and Christine Berrios and her husband Adel Badran; his seven grandchildren, Steven Berrios and his wife Victoria Thomas, Richard J. Lees, III, Brandyn W. Lees, Christopher Gantaifis, Alejandréa Gantaifis, Alia Badran, and Noah Badran; his three siblings, Calixto Berrios, Miguel Berrios and Miriam Berrios.

Family and friends are welcome to gather on Thursday, July 8, 2021 from 5-8 p.m. at Michalski Funeral Home, 463 Monmouth Street, Jersey City.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 9, 2021 at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish, 254 Second Street, Jersey City, followed by a repast in the church’s Marion Hall.
