Warren Stecker Obituary

Warren Stecker died peacefully on the morning of December 28 after a brief period of hospice care at Complete Care at St. Vincent's in Cedar Grove.

He was born the son of Philip Stecker and Kathryn Kiernan. The family came from Queens, New York and lived later in Hoboken and Newark, where Warren resided until recent years when he required skilled nursing care. He attended local grade schools and received his secondary education at the Salesian Juniorate in Stony Point, New York. He earned his college degree at Seton Hall University.

Warren had intense intellectual curiosity and was a voracious reader and collector of books on many subjects. Well informed and gregarious, he was a genial conversationalist and formidable in argument. His varied employment included work as a truant officer for the Newark Board of Education, a computer programmer and a livery driver for many years with Boston Coach Company. His driving skill and safety record were exceptional and his friends rode worry-free with him as driver.

Strong in his Catholic faith, Warren was deeply attached to the traditional Latin liturgy. He had a fine tenor voice and compositional talent that he employed in sacred music.

Predeceased by his sisters Margaret and Sister Ruth Stecker, F.M.A., he leaves no close family members but is survived by many friends who cherish their memories of him, including his godson Davin Untamo.

Visitation will be held at Michalski Funeral Home at 463 Monmouth Street in Jersey City on Sunday January 4 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.  On the next day, a Traditional Latin Requiem Mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul at St. Anthony's Oratory at 1360 Pleasant Valley Way, West Orange. Friends will assemble at the Oratory for Mass at 11:30 rather than take leave at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington.

Donations in Warren's memory may be made to the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco, 655 Belmont Avenue, Haledon, NJ 07508, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
